Maybe this is because people associate humidity with the discomfort of hot, steamy summer days. And it's true that too much humidity causes problems. Yet when properly controlled, humidity offers many proven benefits to your health, home and comfort.
Using an Aprilaire Whole-House Humidifier is one of the most effective ways to add the proper amount of humidity to your indoor air and prevent the problems caused by dry air.
This problem is especially prevalent during the winter heating season. This is because the relative humidity (RH) of the cold, outdoor air drops significantly when brought into your home and heated. Learn more about how relative humidity works.
Physicians and other experts often recommend humidity control to prevent the damaging effects of dry air caused by low relative humidity.
Beyond the damage low humidity causes, it makes you uncomfortable. It can cause:
A whole-house humidifier is designed to deliver the perfect amount of moisture to your home, minimizing the ill effects of dry air and making you more comfortable at lower thermostat settings.
In turn, this will save you money. According to the EPA, every degree you lower your thermostat can result in 4% savings on your heating bill.
"Humidifiers are commonly used in homes to relieve the physical discomforts of dry nose, throat, lips, and skin. The moisture they add to dry air also helps alleviate common nuisances brought on by winter heating, such as static electricity, splitting
woodwork and cracks in paint and furniture."
-U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Installed directly to your home's central heating and cooling system, a whole-house humidifier provides whole-house comfort—unlike portable units that only address certain rooms.
Too much humidity can be as much of a problem as too little humidity. Unlike portable units, a whole-house humidifier continually monitors relative humidity levels and then delivers the perfect amount of moisture to the air throughout your entire home.
Aprilaire offers both evaporative and steam humidifiers that introduce humidity into your home's air in the form of water vapor, which prevents minerals from entering the air in your home and potentially into your lungs.
Maintenance of our humidifiers is easy and infrequent, requiring attention just once or twice a year. Compare that to portable humidifiers that require you to monitor levels in messy tanks.
You may never have to monitor settings or wait until you feel uncomfortable with the Aprilaire Automatic Digital Humidifier Control.
Optimum levels of relative humidity in your home will fluctuate with the changes in outdoor temperature. And this set-it-and-forget-it control keeps your home’s humidity level exactly where you want it.
Aprilaire Wi-Fi Thermostats with IAQ Control provide the most convenient and accurate control of humidity and temperature. Automatic Humidity Control is integrated into the thermostat, and with the app you can easily control temperature and humidity levels anywhere from your mobile device. The app also allows you to control other installed Aprilaire IAQ products for optimum fresh air ventilation and air purity and keeps you up-to-date about changing climate conditions in your home.

Before scientists could prove the air in our homes could adversely impact our health, Aprilaire introduced the first humidifier for the forced air furnace in 1954. As science and technology have progressed, Aprilaire has introduced hundreds of products to promote healthier living by improving the quality of the air we breathe. Aprilaire continues to be the market leader in residential whole-home humidification and Indoor Air Quality products. We offer an extensive portfolio of solutions that create healthy air in your home to help you feel better, sleep better, and live better.
The health benefits of maintaining the optimal humidity level in your home environment are well documented. Maintaining relative humidity between 35% and 45% is shown to reduce the incidence of respiratory infections and symptoms related to allergies and asthma by minimizing the formation of bacteria and viruses, fungi, and dust mites.* Humidifying the air in your home can also help prevent dry skin and premature wrinkles.** Dry air causes itchy, flaking, dry skin which can be irritating – but extremely dry, cracked skin can lead to more serious conditions including Atopic dermatitis (eczema), and even bacterial infections.***
Whether your home is in a dry region of the country, or in an area with seasonal dryness, maintaining the right level of humidity can make all the difference in how comfortable you feel in your home.
Maintaining the proper level of humidity in your home can also help preserve the natural beauty of wood floors, cabinetry, and furnishings and anything else in your home susceptible to warping, cracking, or other permanent damage due to dry air or significant changes in humidity, including musical instruments.
An evaporative humidifier moves air heated by your HVAC system over a wicking water panel inside the humidifier chamber. The warm air is humidified as the water on the panel turns into a vapor and is circulated through the home. Evaporative humidifiers are extremely reliable, last the life of the equipment, and are generally more affordable than steam humidifiers.
Aprilaire offers two types of evaporative humidifiers – a single sensor model with a standard control, and a dual sensor model with a digital control. The single sensor models monitor the percent humidity in the air circulating through your HVAC system and features a simple-to-use standard control for setting the percent humidity target in your home.
The dual sensor humidifier models feature a digital control with a percent humidity reading. It has convenient lights to indicate when the humidifier is running, when it is time to change the water panel, and when a service call is needed. It also features a simple-to-use control to set the percent humidity goal and a switch to run the humidifier only when the furnace is running, or to run continually. The primary sensor monitors the air temperature outside your home to proactively maintain the percent humidity inside your home. The secondary sensor monitors the percent humidity in the air circulating through your HVAC system which is the number shown on the digital display.
A steam humidifier heats water to the boiling point, producing steam, and the HVAC system blower distributes the humidity throughout the home. Aprilaire offers two steam humidifier models, one version for ducted HVAC systems, and a version with a fan for homes without ductwork.
Aprilaire steam humidifiers deliver humidity to a home through the use of the HVAC system ductwork. The humidifier operates utilizing electrode technology in which an electric current flows between two electrodes in the steam canister. This causes water in the canister to boil, generating steam. Drain and fill valves in the humidifier work together to maintain the correct water level in the canister to satisfy the demand for humidity based on the electrical conductivity of the water. Aprilaire steam humidifiers are fitted with advanced dispersion technology to disperse steam at the proper speed and method into the air stream to avoid rusting ducts.
