MERV

What is MERV?

MERV is an acronym for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It was created by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) more than 30 years ago.

The measurement determines the effectiveness of an air filter at trapping particulates. The higher the MERV value, the more effective the filter is at trapping particulates like dust and pollen allergens, airborne viruses, pet dander, and volatile organic compounds.

MERV16

What's the current highest MERV rating?

MERV ranges from 1 - 16.

We offer MERV 11, MERV 13, MERV 13 + Carbon, and MERV 16 air filters.

What are the differences and similarities between MERV & HEPA?

HEPA and MERV are both acronyms. HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. For an air filter to receive true HEPA certification, it must capture 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns.

HEPA filters are more efficient at removing particles than a MERV 16 filter. They are commonly not found in whole-home HVAC systems but are usually found in airplanes or portable air filters. Due to their efficiency, they can cause issues within the HVAC system like pressure drops.

Consult with your HVAC contractor about what MERV air filter is correct for your system.
