How to Test for Radon and When to Call a Pro

2 minute read

Keeping a Healthy Home means paying attention to Indoor Air Quality. While you may be concerned about temperature, humidity, and the presence of airborne contaminants when is the last time you thought about radon? Over 30 states across the country have elevated average radon levels. No matter where you live though, it’s important to make testing a part of your regular home maintenance. Not sure how to test? Explore your options for easy testing and, if needed, AprilAire radon mitigation solutions.

What is Radon?

Radon is a radioactive, colorless, odorless gas that can enter the home through cracks in the foundation. It is estimated that 1 in 15 homes have elevated radon levels, and yet only a fraction of people have tested for radon outside of buying or selling their homes. Considering the prevalence of radon, and the fact that it’s the #1 cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers, radon control should be a priority for homeowners across the country.

When Should You Test for Radon?

If you’re buying or selling a house, state law may require a radon reading to take place. Whether or not this applies to you, radon should still be a top priority before any real estate transaction. So, whether you’re considering a move or are settled in your dream home, radon testing should be on your mind. The EPA recommends annual testing if you do not have an active radon system and every other year if the home has an active radon system. However, we at AprilAire recommend testing annually to monitor any changes in radon levels.

How to Test for Radon

With AprilAire, testing for radon is fast, easy, and reliable! You have the option to order an AprilAire Short-Term Radon Test Kit or find an AprilAire Radon Control Professional to help you through the process. If you opt to perform the test by yourself, all you have to do is hang the device at breathing level, away from drafts and heat sources, in the lowest livable level of your home for 3–7 days. After sending the test kit back for analysis, your results will be emailed to you directly.

When to Call a Pro
