As students go back to school, they will be exposed to new germs and viruses which makes at-home protection all the more critical and MERV 16 is the industry gold standard for filters.

MERV is one of two types of filters and the most efficient one commonly used in whole-home HVAC applications. MERV is a scale or rating created by ASHRAE (The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) and means “minimum efficiency rating value.” Filters are rated from one to 16 and, to bear the highest rating of 16, the filter must be at least 95% efficient on 0.3 microns (AprilAire’s MERV 16 filters capture 98%* of airborne viruses and 99%* of allergy and asthma triggers). For perspective, a human hair is 50–70 microns or about 200 times larger than 0.3 microns.

HEPA, high efficiency particulate air, is the other type of filter and, while common in portable units like AprilAire’s room air purifier, they are not common in residential whole-home HVAC systems. HEPA filters are more typically used for medical or critical environments like clean rooms or operating suites.
