Can An Air Purifier Protect Against COVID-19?
Stopping the spread of COVID-19 is another area of interest when it comes to air purifiers in the home. Early findings showed that HEPA filters could remove virus-sized particles, but is that enough to make a difference in the safety of the air we’re breathing?
Researchers continue to learn more about how the coronavirus spreads, though questions remain over the exact details. Current research indicates that the virus is spread primarily through respiratory droplets that stay in the air for a short amount of time. This is why social distancing of six feet and the use of masks in public are effective means of stopping the spread of the virus.
However, because these respiratory droplets are filled with saliva, mucus, water, and other bodily fluids, they are larger and much heavier than viral particles. That means they fall out of the air more quickly, which is important to note in relation to air purification.
The Environmental Protection Agency states that air purifiers alone are not enough to remove the risk of contracting COVID-19, but they can be an important piece of an overall strategy to improve the safety of indoor spaces.
