Dehumidification a Critical Component for Summer’s High Humidity

3 minute read

AprilAire Whole-House Dehumidifiers Remove Up to 16 Gallons of Water Daily to Increase Comfort and Prevent Mold, Mildew, Pests and Nasty Smells, Especially Important in Homes with Basements and Crawl Spaces.

MADISON, Wis. (May 25, 2022) – With the onset of summer heat and humidity typically arriving right around Memorial Day weekend, AprilAire encourages all homeowners to assess their indoor air quality and add dehumidification to keep humidity in the ideal range of 40–60%, making indoor air more comfortable and helping prevent mold, mildew, pests, and odors.

The company has been the nationwide leader in professional-grade, residential Healthy Air solutions since 1954 and offers many models of whole-home dehumidifiers for every house size and style. Units can remove up to 16 gallons (130 pints) of moisture per day helping to prevent mold and mildew, damp carpeting and furnishings, and reduce odors and pests. With features like a built-in digital control, increased efficiency, and a drain hose (removing the need to empty a messy water reservoir), AprilAire whole-house dehumidifier Models E080, E100, and E130 deliver significant energy savings and have the ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient 2022 rating.

“AprilAire’s line of whole-house dehumidifiers offer 23% annual energy savings above conventional products, a feature which has earned us the ENERGY STAR® designation year after year,” said Jimmy Pendley, president of AprilAire. “Thanks to our built-to-last, cutting-edge innovations, summer heat and humidity can stay outside where they belong, and everyone can enjoy a more comfortable season.”

With homes that have basements, dehumidifiers become an even greater necessity. Up to 50% of a home’s indoor air comes up from the basement, so healthy waterproofing—like vapor barriers and crawl space encapsulation—are critical. Also critical is a commercial-grade dehumidifier to reduce moisture and to prevent dampness, mold, mildew, and odors which can pollute indoor air.

Homes without basements but with crawl spaces pose other issues. Waterproofing and crawl space encapsulation protects not only the health of the home but the health of the homeowner as well. The process includes sealing off the walls and floors to prevent water penetration from the outside. This creates a watertight seal in the crawl space, removing the chance for water to enter and cause problems. The final step to making a crawl space safe for the living area above is installing an AprilAire commercial-grade dehumidifier that can be a “set and forget,” automatic solution for the homeowner to improve humidity and keep it in the comfort sweet spot of 40–60%.

AprilAire provides informational and tutorial videos about waterproofing and encapsulation from Nash Distribution and CGS Waterproofing, Crawl Space Brothers, and Zander Solutions.

Adding whole-house dehumidification and proactively waterproofing is a great way for a homeowner to protect their investment and is significantly less in cost in comparison to fixing the problems caused by dampness. Consider that replacing hardwood floors in a 1,000 sq. ft. home can cost between $6,000 and $12,000. Depending on the extent of a mold issue, a small problem can cost as little as $500 but larger mold removal jobs can cost up to nearly $10,000. And if the dampness and humidity has penetrated floor joists, fees for that remediation can mount into the tens of thousands of dollars. Having balanced humidity between 40–60% can help avoid these types of expensive repairs and major structural damage.
