We’ve shared a lot of information on radon lately because spreading awareness about this dangerous gas is an important part of AprilAire’s mission to ensure every family has access to Healthy Air.
We know that, as a homeowner, it can be difficult to worry about a problem that you can’t see or smell (like radon gas). You’ve got enough things to worry about, after all. But because of the dangers of radon exposure, AprilAire recommends getting your home tested for radon levels annually.
Marcus Nelson, an AprilAire Radon Control Professional, explains why ongoing testing and monitoring for radon are essential.
“It’s one of those things that people think about when they’re buying a new house but then forget about and never revisit. I like to think of it as people that have a well are supposed to get their water tested annually. The same actually is true about radon. It can fluctuate over time, so it’s good to monitor any changes.”
To show you how essential it is to keep your home safe from radon, Tamara Day, a Healthy Air Ambassador for AprilAire, recently had her home tested. And she was glad she did after learning her home had elevated levels of the harmful gas.
“I was shocked, and I had no idea that was something we were dealing with. I am thrilled we’re getting it mitigated because my daughter loves to have a little fort under the stairs in the basement, which is where the radon is the strongest.”
Testing can be simple, as Tamara found when using the AprilAire Radon Test Kit in her home.
“The process was crazy easy. They sent everything I needed in the mail. I hung it up in the basement and waited a few days and sent it back. AprilAire did all the hard work!”
After learning about the elevated radon levels, Tamara worked with SWAT Environmental through the AprilAire Healthy Air Professional network to solve the problem in her home. They used an AprilAire Radon Mitigation Fan and industry best practices to mitigate the radon and make sure the problem stayed away.
To wrap up her assessment of the radon mitigation process, Tamara strongly recommends that other homeowners test for radon at least once per year.
“I have never tested for radon in our home. Maybe when we first bought the house but I don’t even remember. Now I would suggest everyone do it. Especially if you have a basement.”
