AprilAire: The Birth of Our Air Innovations
Our Humble Beginnings
AprilAire and our unique Healthy Air journey began back in 1938 when Research Products Corporation—our parent company—was born in Madison, Wisconsin. Back then, former employees of the Burgess Battery Company had secured patents and buildings from their former employer with a goal of specializing in building materials and products that conditioned the water supply.
During wartime in the early 1940s, their products increased in demand, allowing the company to expand and pursue a different method of conditioning instead. Here, air innovations were introduced.
From Water Innovations to Air Innovations
Our shift in focus began in 1954 when AprilAire took on the world of Indoor Air Quality and manufactured the first AprilAire Whole-House Humidifier! This air innovation was revolutionary, showing the importance of humidity control and clean air homes in our own backyard and soon, across the country.
Wisconsin’s seasons can be a bit jarring, which is what inspired Research Products and its employees to focus on something they regularly experienced: The unhealthy effects of dry winter air. Following our humidifier air innovation, AprilAire expanded and the first line of whole-house Indoor Air Quality solutions donned our name.
Growing Our Air Innovations
The AprilAire humidification product lineup that opened up our eyes to the importance of quality air innovations became incredibly popular. So much so, AprilAire expanded into more buildings located across Madison, WI—purchasing land about 25 miles north in Poynette, WI in hopes of establishing a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for air innovations. In 1960, our team broke ground.
Around this time, our parent company Research Products went on to explore other investment areas but their forward-thinking approach and commitment to air innovations has stayed with the AprilAire brand since.
Our Expanse Into Clean Air Homes
In 1989, AprilAire introduced yet another air innovation, bringing the first automatic humidifier control to market and setting the stage for modern humidistats.
By 2000, our line of whole-house Indoor Air Quality solutions could be found in clean air homes across the country! From here, we’ve continued to perfect our whole-house air innovations, expanding into products such as Whole-House Air Purifiers, Air Filters, Ventilation Systems, Thermostats, Dehumidifiers, and more. Recently, we even went on to launch comprehensive radon testing and mitigation solutions. Together, we and our HVAC partners (our Healthy Air Professionals) have been able to provide a full suite of Healthy Air offerings and continue establishing clean air homes in various communities.
