Seasonal Allergy Relief: Tips for Combating Allergy-Related Dizziness

Spring means allergies. When you think of spring and seasonal allergies, what comes to mind? For us, it’s the nature-related things going on outside, like pollenating flowers and trees or freshly cut grass. But, what we fail to think about are the allergies we experience indoors in the springtime, too. With open windows, pets, and frequent time outdoors, we’re bringing allergens inside, and once they’re in here, they don’t have many ways to escape. After all, our indoor air is 5 times more polluted than the air outside, and since we spend about 90% of our lifetime indoors, it’s possible to see increased allergy symptoms while at home even when we’re not directly exposed.

What allergy symptoms do you experience? Some of us see the general, well-known spring allergy symptoms like runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing. But there’s a lesser known symptom: allergy-related dizziness. The allergens around us—whether they’re indoors or out—can affect a tunnel that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, called the Eustachian tube. This tube helps regulate balance and equalizes pressure so we stay upright and stable. When the tube is blocked with mucus caused by allergens in the air, it struggles to regulate balance and pressure, making you unstable and causing symptoms of dizziness and even vertigo.

What types of allergens are the cause of dizziness? Well, it can range from foods (like gluten, wheat, and dairy) to airborne allergens (like pet dander, dust, or mold). The only real way to avoid feeling symptoms of dizziness is to avoid allergens altogether…but that can prove difficult with all that goes on in our world that we can’t control. Luckily, we can help you tackle the feat of reducing the airborne allergens in your home and even help you combat allergy-induced dizziness or vertigo-like symptoms with these tips.

Remedy Your Allergy-Related Dizziness

First things first, try these home remedies to help reduce your symptoms of dizziness:

  • Drink water to promote hydration
  • Consume foods high in Vitamin C, D, and E like strawberries, spinach, or oranges
  • Raise your iron levels by eating meats or beans

Suppress Allergy Symptoms

Now that your symptoms of dizziness have subsided, you can begin to focus on what’s causing your symptoms and get to the source. It’s best to know what you’re allergic to so that you can reduce your exposure and lessen the symptoms you experience. Get started with:

  • Allergy Testing: See an allergist to learn exactly what you’re reacting to and how you can limit your exposure or symptoms
  • Medication or Allergy Shots: Talk to your doctor about OTC medications, like Benadryl, that you can try for relief. Or, if your allergies are more severe, you can discuss prescription medication or allergy shots
  • Dietary Changes: If you’re experiencing food-related allergy symptoms, consider trying an elimination diet to figure out what foods you may be sensitive to

Fight Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD)

When you’re a routine allergy sufferer, you may experience this pretty common condition that comes from frequent mucus buildup in your Eustachian tube. It can also be caused by changing altitudes, like when you’re in an airplane and need to pop your ears. If you’re having symptoms of fullness or pain, try:

  • Home Remedies like chewing gum or using saline nose spray
  • Medications like Benadryl, Tylenol, Advil, or doctor-prescribed ear drops

Emerging Tool Bipolar Ionization Still Under Investigation

As discussed in a previous blog, using bipolar ionization as a standalone solution is problematic, but if it is in the confines of an HVAC system, it can inactivate airborne bacteria and viruses and increase filtration efficiency

Proper Disposal of Air Filters

Steps for Disposal of Air Filters

Aprilaire air filters are an integral part of your HVAC system. They trap dust and other airborne pollutants that flow through your ducts, which can make you sick or clog your HVAC system leading to expensive repairs.

Over time, the filter gets clogged and becomes less efficient at trapping harmful pollutants like airborne viruses. It is important to replace your air filter to keep your system running efficiently.

Here are some tips to follow for the disposal of air filters.

Turn your HVAC system off

Turn your system off before removing your old filter. Do not run your HVAC system without a new air filter in here.

Have a plastic bag ready

Your air filter is full of dust, debris, and other contaminants that you do not want to end up back in the air or on your ground. Having a bag ready to go will help make this transition less precarious. In addition, do not bump or shake your air filter when placing it in the bag.

Tape the bag shut

To prevent any drops or spills once the filter is in the bag, carefully tape it shut to seal.

Place the filter in an outdoor trash can

Keeping your old filter in an indoor trash can could lead to the bag reopening and the dirt and debris in the filter escaping back into your air. Placing it in an outdoor trash can will help remedy this.

Replace filter

Place your replacement Aprilaire filter in the HVAC system and then turn the system back on once the new filter is inserted.

Experiencing the Fight For Air Climb

Before the Fight For Air Climb

Entering the US Bank Center for the American Lung Association’s Fight For Air Climb was a rush of energy.

This seemed less like an arduous trek up 1,000 stairs and more of an indoor festival. There were volunteers ready to greet you and pump you up for the ensuing climb and people from different companies sitting at tables ready to hand out souvenirs.

They were probably also there to distract you after you just got done instinctively looking up toward the top of the 47-story US Bank Center in downtown Milwaukee becoming a little uneasy at the prospect of your journey upward.

Before you made your climb, you gathered as a team and took several escalators down to the basement level before getting warmed up with a quick aerobic routine. Then you took a long and winding tunnel where you greeted by more volunteers who were cheering you on. It was hard not to feel inspired and excited.

During the Fight For Air Climb

One-by-one people took off up toward the top of the US Bank Center to begin their Fight For Air Climb. I, like most, started off confidently and quickly. I took the first six flights easily, but then by flight eight, I began to fight for air. I now understand why they title this climb just that. My mind and my body were at odds. I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to continue at the same pace to get it over with as quickly as possible or to slow down and feel better. I went with the former.

Everyone in the stairwell was trudging onward with the same dilemma. We all were gasping for air as we kept pushing up each step and each flight toward the top of the Fight For Air Climb. At several points, I wondered if I was actually making any progress.

Every 10 flights there was a group of volunteers handing out cups of water and words of encouragement. Both were sorely needed to help push me along.

With each passing flight, I kept a tally of how many flights I had left. Twenty flights down, 27 more flights to go; 30 flights down, 17 flights to go; Ok, 40 flights down, 7 to go. By the time I got to the 40th floor, I knew I could make the last push to make it to the top of my Fight For Air Climb journey.

After the Fight For Air Climb

Eventually, I reached the top after 9 minutes and 31 seconds. At the top of the stairwell, I was met by volunteers who were cheering me on and by other climbers who were also catching their breath and taking in the picturesque views of Milwaukee and Lake Michigan afforded to us by the tallest building in Wisconsin.

As I grabbed a water and walked around soaking in both the views of the city and my accomplishment, it was really cool to watch teams taking pictures together or greeting other climbers with high-fives and smiles. There was a certain camaraderie found in a common struggle.

Despite the lingering soreness, I cannot wait for next year’s climb. No matter if I beat my time from this year or not, it’s about fighting for air together and helping those impacted with lung disease.

Aprilaire Partner Contractor Joins Fight For Air Climb

“What can you do or say when your family is suffering such losses? It’s devastating,” said Christopher Ciongoli, HVAC salesman/estimator with Aprilaire partner Whalen & Ives.

Chris is participating in the NYC American Lung Association Fight For Air Climb on April 4, 2020. When he heard that Aprilaire was the national Healthy Air sponsor of the event he signed on to the Aprilaire team.

“An opportunity to make difference just appeared to me on Jan 10th in an email from Aprilaire informing me about the Fight for Air Climb. This was it. This is how I would help make a difference and support my wife as well as so many others that are impacted by lung disease”.

Lung disease became an all too familiar fixture in Chris’s life last year when his brother-in-law, mother-in-law, and father-in-law all died from lung disease.

As of February 7, he’s raised 90 percent of his fundraising goal. Not only is Chris excited to help raise funds and awareness, he told us he’s already reaping the benefits of training for the 849-step climb.

“My blood pressure has dropped, my pants are getting loose, and my dog Crosby is getting back in shape too!”

Every morning he goes out with dog Crosby and strengthens his legs and increases his stamina to make sure he can make it to the 44th floor of the 1290 Avenue of Americas building in New York City.
