Everything You Need to Know About Radon

What is radon? It’s a naturally occurring, odorless, colorless gas that is known to impact the health of you and your family if it enters into your home. Radon gas can build up inside homes, workplaces, and even schools. Because it’s odorless and colorless, it isn’t easily detected by smell or look, making it possible for it to unknowingly rise to dangerous levels. With radon being the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, it’s incredibly important to know whether you and your family are being exposed to radon gas. Below, we answer all your radon-related questions.

How Does Radon Gas Form?

Radon comes from uranium present in rock and soil. Eventually, that uranium breaks down and turns into radium, which forms into radon gas.

How Does Radon Get into Your Home?

Being odorless and colorless, radon can be pretty sneaky. It can enter into your home through cracks in walls, basement floors, foundations, and other kinds of openings. It’s rare but in some cases, radon can enter through your home’s water supply or building materials as well.

When radon gets trapped indoors, it can linger in dangerous levels. As it decays, it releases radioactive byproducts, which can enter into your lungs as you breathe and increase your risk of lung cancer and other serious health complications.

How Do You Know If There’s Radon in Your Home?

It can definitely be hard to detect since you can’t experience it by smell or sight. Health-related symptoms are a key sign that you’ve had radon gas exposure. If you experience possible signs or symptoms of lung cancer, it’s possible that you’ve been exposed to radon and should immediately contact your doctor. These symptoms may include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • New or worsening cough
  • Pain or tightness in the chest
  • Hoarseness
  • Trouble swallowing

Another way to know (and the best way to find out) if there’s radon in your home is to test for it. There are plenty of testing options and they’re generally inexpensive, costing about the same as other common home repairs. Some options include:

  • DIY, At-Home Tests: These tests can take anywhere from two to seven days to measure your home’s exposure. Other, more detailed tests can take up to three months. All you have to do is follow the instructions and send the results back to a lab which will test your sample for present radon.
  • Professional Tests: A certified radon professional can come to your home and test for radon, which is the recommended route. Professional tests can not only be more accurate, but can give you the peace of mind that your findings are conclusive and in good hands.

It’s important for your home’s radon levels to be as low as possible. If, in your own testing efforts or with a professional’s test, you find a spike in your levels, remediation is necessary to lessen your exposure to this harmful gas.

What Remediation Options Are There?

If your findings show that your radon gas levels are high, you must look into remediation. Good news: Radon remediation systems can reduce your levels up to 99%, making them incredibly effective. The most popular, and widely used, remediation method is a vent pipe and fan. With this system, it’s necessary to seal all cracks on your home’s exterior or foundation in order to keep radon at bay. This combination traps radon gas and vents it to the outside of your home so it doesn’t enter your indoor air.

Coronavirus is going to have a major impact on our lives moving forward. As scientists and medical experts continue to grapple with the consequences of this and other airborne viruses, engineers and others are looking at preventable ways to reduce its spread.

The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers believes the best way to prevent the spread of airborne viruses is to utilize a three-pronged approach combining fresh air ventilation, air filtration, and healthy humidity in to a Healthy Air System™. These three methods can help reduce the chance of contracting and transmitting airborne viruses.

Fresh air ventilation helps bring fresh air into the space. Air filtration helps to help capture airborne viruses and other airborne pollutants. Moving forward non-healthcare commercial buildings in the United States will be encouraged to maintain temperature and humidity as applicable to the infectious aerosol to reduce the likelihood of an airborne virus being transmitted in these indoor spaces.

Farming and Air Quality – What to Know about Living and Working near Farmlands

American farmlands are among the most productive in the world. They fill a vital need, feeding millions of people every single day. Studies have shown that agricultural pollution from farms far outweighs all other human sources of fine-particulate air pollution in much of the United States.

The Environmental Protection Agency reports four main agricultural activities linked to greenhouse gas emissions: soil management; enteric fermentation (a fancy term for ruminant animals’ burps and gas); manure management; and fossil fuel consumption.

Enteric fermentation and manure management are responsible for the emission of methane (CH4), and soil management accounts for the biggest source of nitrous oxide (N2O).

Additionally, agricultural pollution contains other dangerous gases and pollutants including:

  • Carbon dioxide
  • Ammonia
  • Hydrogen sulfide
  • Airborne particulate matter

Alternatives To Large-Scale Agriculture

Most of the pesticides and pollution come from large farms that produce food for a wide range of areas. One way to reduce the need for these types of farms is to focus on eating what’s grown in our area.

And here are some other steps you can take to help reduce agricultural pollution regardless of your proximity to farmland:

  • Eat more plant-based food and consume less red meat, (the most carbon-intensive food)
  • When you do buy animal products, check for any of the following labels:
    • USDA Certified Organic
    • USDA Process Verified No Antibiotics Ever
    • Global Animal Partnership (GAP)
    • American Grassfed
    • Certified Humane
    • Animal Welfare Approved
  • Support local farmers who are practicing more sustainable growing methods
  • Meal plan to prevent food waste, which is a significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions
  • Buying “ugly” produce is another way to cut down on food waste – you can buy it at any level, even directly from local farmers
  • Be mindful of this year’s “Dirty Dozen” when buying produce – these are the fruits and vegetables known to carry the highest amounts of pesticides and should be purchased organic whenever possible
  • Plant your own backyard garden to grow your own chemical-free food

Healthy Juice Recipes – Quick, Delicious Fruit and Veggie Combinations

Fruits and vegetables are great sources of the vitamins and minerals that help our bodies function properly. But making sure you get the recommended amount of those fruits and vegetables each day, (usually 5 servings), can prove to be quite the challenge.

Juicing is a great way to supplement your intake of whole fruits and vegetables, and makes for a tasty, refreshing treat. You can enjoy one fruit or vegetable serving with only 150 ml (about 5 oz.) of juice.

Tips for Beginners

  1. Simplicity – Limit yourself to recipes that call for 2-4 ingredients so they’ll be quick and easy when you’re first starting out. As you get the hang of juicing, you can more comfortably take on recipes with a long list of fruits and veggies as well as other additives without being overwhelmed.
  2. Balance – The best juicing recipes call for a combination of sweet tasting fruit and lots of greens or low-sugar vegetables. That makes it easy to pack in more nutrients while still enjoying the taste and tartness of the fruits.
  3. Chill – Juice is always better cold! Put your fresh juice in the freezer for five minutes before you drink it or add some ice cubes if you’re in a hurry. Just remember to drink it within half an hour of making it to ensure you consume it at its freshest.

Ask Nurse Kate: 5 Questions for Doctors about Seasonal Allergies

For many of us, spring and fall allergies are more common than the common cold. Day in and day out, we deal with sneezing, itchy eyes, runny noses, and more.

And as many of us are spending more times it’s especially important to make sure we are breathing healthy air in our homes. Our team is working hard to ensure you and your family can breathe clean, healthy air.

Finding answers on WebMD won’t cut it, which means it’s time to officially take action.

We can’t diagnose each and every one of you ourselves. Our resident health expert, Nurse Kate, shares the five questions you should ask a doctor to help alleviate your spring and fall allergies.

Question #1: What other conditions have the same symptoms as allergies? Can they be ruled out?

This is a great question to ask your doctor because symptoms of seasonal allergies often mimic cold symptoms. It can be challenging to distinguish between the two. The common cold usually lasts only a few weeks and often causes fevers. Allergies, on the other hand, do not cause fevers and typically last longer than common colds.

Question #2: Is there a way to find out what specifically triggers my allergies so I can avoid them?

Asking your doctor how to best determine what is triggering your allergies will help you effectively manage your symptoms in the long run. Your doctor may recommend allergy testing to help you determine what your triggers are, and how best to avoid them. This is an extremely helpful question to ask, because after all, the easiest way to prevent allergy symptoms is to avoid whatever causes your allergies in the first place!

Question #3: I’ve never had allergies my entire life. Why is this suddenly happening?

Being diagnosed with allergies as an adult can be quite surprising, but is not uncommon. While the reasons why are not well understood, sometimes our body’s “allergy switch” suddenly turns on after years of exposure. Research is always providing new answers and insights. Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor about the “why” behind your seasonal allergies. You never know what new information your doctor may have!

Question #4: Is medicine necessarily the best way to alleviate my symptoms?

This is an important question to ask your doctor. While medicine does a great job at alleviating allergy symptoms, it’s not the only solution. Depending on what’s causing your allergies to flare, your doctor may recommend limiting exposure to your triggers.

These can be through different prevention methods such as nasal rinses, vacuuming, and dusting regularly. Maybe even keeping home windows closed during high pollen count days, or utilizing air purifiers or filters to keep your home air allergen free. You can also add an Aprilaire 213 and Aprilaire 413 air filter which helps filter out most common allergy triggers. People sometimes compare themselves to others as a way of fostering self-improvement, self-motivation, and a positive self-image. As a result, humans constantly evaluate themselves, and others, across domains such as attractiveness, wealth, intelligence, and success.

Jessica Abo, an award-winning journalist and author of Unfiltered: How to Be as Happy as You Look on Social Media, refers to this as the “Compare and Despair Trap.”

Tips For Managing Your Kids’ Social Media Intake

To help your kids enjoy the connectedness of social media without damaging their mental health, follow these tips.

1. Stay Informed

Social Media is constantly changing, so it’s a good idea to keep up to date with which apps are appropriate for your child. Here are some of the most popular ones that children and teens are using right now:

Once your child is at an age where you have allowed them to create social media accounts, it’s important to make sure they keep their accounts private and their privacy settings updated. You should have access to all their account information so you can set their privacy to the maximum setting and ensure their content is hidden from anyone who might try to misuse it.

3. Set Guidelines/Rules for Social Media

This should be a team effort. By involving your child in the setting of the rules, it lessens the likelihood of them sneaking around behind your back or setting up fake accounts to get around the rules. You want to instill healthy/positive social media habits right from the start so they feel empowered to make good decisions without you watching over their shoulder.

4. Keep an Open Dialogue

You can’t monitor your child’s social media activity 24/7, (nor should you), so it’s important to communicate regularly with your child about what’s going on in their online world. Ask questions and pay attention to what they’re saying. What are they posting about? Why are they choosing to post that? What are their friends posting? How does that make them feel? If your child is showing signs of stress or anxiety when talking about social media, it’s important to address it.

5. Empathize with Them

You might not be able to relate to the disappointment of your first TikTok dance not going viral, or your crush liking your best friend’s latest Instagram picture, but you have felt left out and let down before. Don’t dismiss their feelings around social media as if they don’t matter, because, to them, it’s sometimes all that matters. Share with them about a similar situation and hopefully the lesson you learned or growth you experienced because of what you went through.

6. Set Aside Tech-Free Time

You can say this is for your screen obsessed teen, but the reality is we are all addicted to different forms of social media. Model a healthy relationship with your devices by creating some real life face time as a family every day. This is a great opportunity to check in with each other and ease some of the stress and anxiety that can come from checking your phone every five seconds.
