- What is a MERV rating?
The MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is a test designed to reduce the confusion of an air filtration device’s performance by looking at the minimum or worst case scenario for a product’s performance. MERV tests an air filter’s efficiency on 3 size ranges of particles, large particles 3.0 – 10 microns, medium size particles 1.0 – 3.0 microns and small particles 0.30 – 1.0 micron. Two products may have the same MERV rating, however may differ in initial particle size efficiency, initial air resistance, air leakage, bypass air, service life and tested airflow. The standard requires the test to be conducted at 1200 CFM. Not all manufacturers test at 1200 CFM. A reduced airflow will allow the air filtration device to have a higher MERV rating. Since MERV does not look at performance over time, a product may have a lower MERV as it begins to filter particulate. MERV also uses test dust that contains carbon. As a result no Electronic Air Cleaner can be tested under the MERV. The carbon negates the electronic section of the air cleaner.

The 1000 series (models 1210, 1310 and 1410) includes a MERV 11 filter. The model 2000 series (models 2210, 2310 and 2410) and 3000 series (models 3210, 3310 and 3410) include a MERV 13 filter. In addition the 3000 series includes our Model 8476 Universal Programmable (4Heat/2Cool) Thermostat featuring Event-Based™ Air Cleaning. Event based control allows for operation of the HVAC systems fan for a specific schedule to allow consumers to control when the air in their home is being cleaned.

If you own an Aprilaire Humidifier the answer is a very simple “Yes.” The humidifier will not have an adverse affect on the air cleaner since the humidity being created is vapor. If you do not own an Aprilaire Humidifier - we recommend that you contact the manufacturer of your humidifier for specific application information.

The retail price of a replacement filter media is generally in the $40-$60 range. No air cleaner will completely eliminate the need to dust the home though Aprilaire Air Cleaners will certainly reduce the level of dust in your home. Below are some tips to use an Aprilaire Air Cleaner to remove the maximum amount of dust: - Run the HVAC system fan on continuous operation, so the air cleaner is always cleaning the air. - Run the HVAC system fan on continuous operation while vacuuming and for an hour afterward. Vacuum cleaners stir up a considerable amount of dust and running the HVAC system fan during this time will enable the Aprilaire Air Cleaner to remove more dust.
